Tourist-NCG Clash Sparks Investigation in Grand-Baie

A confrontation involving an American tourist and an officer of the National Coast Guard (NCG) at the public beach in Grand-Baie has triggered an inquiry after a video of the incident circulated widely on social media.

The incident reportedly occurred on Monday, 5 October 2026. The footage shows a heated exchange between the tourist and an NCG officer before the situation escalates. A third person is also seen becoming involved in the confrontation.

The incident has attracted considerable attention because it took place in one of Mauritius’ major tourist areas and involved personnel responsible for maintaining safety along the country’s beaches.

Tourism Ministry Calls for Facts to Be Established

Junior Minister for Tourism Anabelle Savabaddy said an inquiry was being pursued to establish exactly what happened and determine whether any action should follow.

Speaking on Radio Plus, Savabaddy said both tourists and officers working on Mauritius’ beaches need to be protected. She stressed that the investigation should be completed as quickly as possible so that the facts can be established before decisions are taken.

She also urged caution over drawing conclusions from the video circulating online, noting that the circumstances need to be examined carefully and impartially.

What the Viral Video Shows

According to reporting by L’Express, the video shows the tourist and the NCG officer initially engaged in a discussion before the confrontation escalates.

The footage appears to show the officer attempting to trip the tourist before pushing him to the ground. A third individual then approaches and is seen kicking the tourist while he is on the ground. The identity and precise role of that third person were not immediately established in the reports.

Because the video captures only part of the incident, authorities have stressed the importance of establishing the complete circumstances before attributing responsibility.

Tourist Reportedly Charged with Rogue and Vagabond

The American tourist, aged 41 according to Le Defi Media, was reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

He was subsequently prosecuted for Rogue and Vagabond before the District Court of Rivière-du-Rempart. On 6 October, he was fined Rs 1,000, along with Rs 100 in court costs, according to Radio One and Le Defi Media.

The tourist was also reported to have been admitted to the hospital in the north following the confrontation.

Third Person Sought by Police

The confrontation also involved another individual who intervened after the dispute between the tourist and the NCG officer.

According to Junior Minister Anabelle Savabaddy, police were actively looking for this person. The authorities are expected to examine the available evidence as part of the wider inquiry.

The involvement of the third individual has added another element to the investigation, particularly because the video appears to show the tourist being kicked while on the ground.

Tourism Minister Condemns Violence

Tourism Minister Richard Duval also reacted to the incident, condemning violence from all sides.

He said violence against the tourist by a Mauritian should not be accepted, while also criticising the behaviour attributed to the American tourist and the person who allegedly kicked him. Duval additionally warned that the circulation of such footage could damage Mauritius’ reputation as a tourist destination.

The minister’s comments underline the importance of maintaining safety and respectful conduct at tourist locations, while allowing the authorities to establish responsibility through the proper procedures.

Grand-Baie Incident Raises Questions About Beach Safety

Grand-Baie is one of Mauritius’ best-known tourist areas, making the incident particularly sensitive for the tourism sector.

Beach and coastal security officers regularly interact with visitors, boat operators, swimmers and other members of the public. Maintaining a professional relationship between visitors and authorities is therefore important for both public safety and Mauritius’ tourism image.

The Tourism Ministry’s position is that both visitors and officers must be protected, while any allegations of misconduct should be examined through an impartial process.

Investigation Will Determine Responsibility

The available video has generated strong reactions online, but authorities have cautioned against reaching conclusions before the investigation is completed.

The inquiry is expected to consider the circumstances leading to the confrontation, the conduct of the people involved and any other available evidence. The Tourism Police have also taken up the matter, according to the junior minister.

Any further action will depend on the findings of the investigation and the applicable legal procedures.

Final Thought

The Grand-Baie confrontation has highlighted the need for calm and responsible behaviour from both tourists and public officers. While the video has raised serious questions about what happened, establishing the complete facts should remain the priority.

Mauritius’ reputation as a welcoming tourist destination depends not only on its beaches and hospitality but also on safety, professionalism and respect for everyone involved. A transparent investigation can help determine responsibility and ensure that appropriate action is taken based on evidence rather than social-media speculation.
