Mauritius has a strong culture of education, reading, creative work and professional study, and that is reflected in the number of bookstores and stationery businesses serving communities across the island. Students preparing for examinations, parents buying school supplies, teachers looking for classroom materials, office workers purchasing everyday essentials and hobbyists searching for art products all have different requirements.
A good books and stationery shop is therefore not simply a place where someone buys a notebook or a novel. The better stores bring together product variety, accessibility, knowledgeable staff, reliable stock, useful educational materials and convenient purchasing options.
This guide looks at five established names that are relevant to people searching for books, school stationery, office supplies, art materials and related products in Mauritius.
The list includes Bookcourt Caudan, Éditions Le Printemps, Officeworld Ltd, HobbyWorld Port Louis and Pelican Stationery Ltd.

What Makes a Good Bookstore or Stationery Shop in Mauritius?
Choosing a bookstore or stationery shop depends heavily on what you need.
A university student may be looking for academic books, files, notebooks, pens and printing-related products. A parent preparing for the school year may need exercise books, pencils, rulers, school bags, art materials and textbooks. An artist may care more about specialist paper, drawing tools, paints and craft products.
For businesses, the priorities can be different again. Office workers may need printer accessories, paper, files, folders, pens and other everyday supplies.
For this reason, our assessment considers several factors rather than relying on a single customer-rating figure.
Main factors considered
- Product range
- Books and educational selection
- Stationery variety
- Art and creative materials
- Availability of school supplies
- Office and business products
- Convenience and accessibility
- Online presence
- Customer information
- Established reputation
- Location
- Services offered
- Overall usefulness for the intended customer
What Should You Look For When Choosing a Bookstore or Stationery Shop?
There is no single shop that will necessarily be suitable for every customer.
The right choice depends on the shopping list.
For students
Students should consider:
- Textbook availability
- Exercise books
- Pens and pencils
- Files and folders
- School project materials
- Art supplies
- Printing and photocopying
- Location
- Availability of required brands
If a school provides a detailed stationery list, it is worth taking the list with you rather than purchasing products based only on appearance.
For parents
Parents may want to compare:
- Complete school-supply availability
- Product quality
- Prices
- School-specific requirements
- Children’s books
- Art and craft products
- Availability of educational materials
Buying everything from one shop can save time, but comparing prices on higher-value products can also be worthwhile.
For teachers
Teachers may require:
- Classroom stationery
- Markers
- Educational materials
- Craft supplies
- Printing products
- Filing materials
- Children’s educational resources
Specialist stores can sometimes offer products that are not commonly stocked by general stationery shops.
For offices
Businesses should look at:
- Paper availability
- Printing supplies
- Toner and cartridges
- Files and folders
- Pens
- Desk accessories
- Bulk-order options
- Invoicing
- Delivery
- Business quotations
For larger orders, asking for a formal quotation is generally more useful than comparing the price of individual retail products.
For artists and hobbyists
Creative customers should consider:
- Paper quality
- Drawing materials
- Paints
- Craft products
- Colouring products
- Specialist tools
- Children’s creative products
- Brand availability
HobbyWorld is particularly relevant to this category because its official catalogue includes creative craft and educational products.
Books vs Stationery: Which Type of Shop Should You Choose?
The phrase “books and stationery shop” covers several different types of businesses.
A bookstore is generally more useful when your main requirement is reading material.
A school-supply shop may be better when your shopping list consists mainly of notebooks, pencils, files and classroom materials.
An office-supply business may be more appropriate for companies requiring paper, toner and administrative products.
A creative retailer is often more suitable for art and craft projects.
This is why the list above does not treat all five businesses as identical.
Online Shopping for Books and Stationery in Mauritius
Online shopping has changed how customers purchase educational and stationery products.
Instead of visiting multiple shops, customers can sometimes search a website first, compare available products and then decide whether to order online or visit a branch.
Bookcourt currently operates an online store and publishes home-delivery information.
Éditions Le Printemps also operates an online shopping platform and provides delivery and customer-service information through its website.
HobbyWorld’s official website also provides online products and publishes delivery and click-and-collect information.
For customers ordering online, it is important to check:
- Delivery charges
- Delivery times
- Return conditions
- Product availability
- Payment methods
- Whether the listed product is currently in stock
A product shown online is not necessarily guaranteed to remain available until checkout.
How to Save Money When Buying Stationery
Stationery costs can add up quickly, particularly when several children are preparing for a new academic year.
One practical approach is to separate essential purchases from optional purchases.
Buy the items required by the school first.
Then compare prices for additional products.
For frequently used items such as notebooks, pens and pencils, buying suitable multipacks may sometimes be more economical than purchasing individual items. However, customers should compare the actual unit price rather than assuming that a larger package is cheaper.
For businesses, bulk purchasing can also make sense when the same items are used regularly.
Final Thoughts
Mauritius has a varied selection of bookstores and stationery businesses, and the right shop depends largely on what you are trying to buy.
Bookcourt Caudan is relevant to readers and customers looking for a broad bookstore environment. Éditions Le Printemps has a strong educational and publishing connection and is particularly relevant to students, teachers and readers interested in local publications. Officeworld Ltd is included for customers focused on practical office and stationery requirements. HobbyWorld Port Louis is especially relevant to creative, craft and educational-product shoppers. Pelican Stationery Ltd provides a practical combination of stationery, photocopying, printing and cartridge-related services.
Rather than choosing a shop purely because it appears first on a list, customers should consider the actual products they need, the location, current stock, opening hours, prices and available services.
For students and parents, checking the required school list before shopping can make the process easier. Businesses may benefit from requesting quotations for larger stationery orders. Artists and hobbyists may want to compare specialist product ranges before purchasing.
For Mauritius Ranking, the objective of this article is to provide useful, transparent and regularly reviewable information in one place.
