Petrol and diesel prices in Mauritius have increased by 10% following a decision by the Petroleum Pricing Committee (PPC) on Monday, 28 September 2026.
The price of petrol, officially known as Mogas, rises from Rs 70.65 to Rs 77.70 per litre, while Gas Oil (diesel) increases from Rs 71.25 to Rs 78.35 per litre. The revised prices take effect from Tuesday, 29 September 2026.
Petroleum Pricing Committee Reviews Fuel Prices
The Petroleum Pricing Committee met on 28 September to assess the retail prices of Mogas and Gas Oil under the Consumer Protection (Control of Price of Petroleum Products) Regulations.
The committee reviewed developments in international petroleum prices and recommended adjustments to the controlled retail prices of both fuels.
Fuel prices in Mauritius are subject to a regulated pricing mechanism. Mogas and Gas Oil are among the commodities covered by the maximum fixed-price system.
New Petrol Price: Rs 77.70 Per Litre
The new retail price of petrol is Rs 77.70 per litre.
This represents an increase of Rs 7.05 per litre compared with the previous price of Rs 70.65.
| Fuel | Previous Price | New Price | Increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol (Mogas) | Rs 70.65/L | Rs 77.70/L | Rs 7.05/L |
| Diesel (Gas Oil) | Rs 71.25/L | Rs 78.35/L | Rs 7.10/L |
The increase means motorists will pay more each time they refuel from 29 September.
Diesel Price Rises to Rs 78.35
The price of diesel, or Gas Oil, has also been revised upward.
It rises from Rs 71.25 to Rs 78.35 per litre, an increase of Rs 7.10 per litre.
Diesel is widely used by commercial vehicles, buses, trucks and other vehicles, meaning the adjustment can also have implications beyond individual motorists.
International Oil Prices Considered
According to the State Trading Corporation (STC), the PPC took account of the movement in international prices of Mogas and Gas Oil when reviewing the domestic prices.
For Mogas, the price calculation uses actual prices for July to September 2026 together with projected prices for October to December 2026.
The STC stated that the new reference price of Mogas is US$140.64 per barrel, while the exchange-rate assumption used in the calculation is Rs 48.1803 per US dollar.
Price Stabilisation Account Faces Deficit
The committee also took note of the financial position of the Price Stabilisation Account (PSA).
According to the STC, the account is estimated to have a deficit of approximately Rs 3.63 billion.
The PSA forms part of the mechanism used in Mauritius to manage fluctuations in petroleum prices and their impact on consumers.
The latest adjustment therefore comes against a background of both international fuel-price movements and pressures within the domestic price-stabilisation mechanism.
Impact on Mauritian Motorists
For private motorists, the immediate impact will depend on the quantity of fuel purchased.
For example, filling a vehicle with 40 litres of petrol at the previous price would have cost approximately Rs 2,826. At the new price, the same 40-litre quantity costs approximately Rs 3,108.
That represents an additional Rs 282 for a 40-litre fill-up.
For diesel users, 40 litres previously cost approximately Rs 2,850, compared with approximately Rs 3,134 at the new price.
These examples illustrate the direct effect of the new pump prices, although actual spending will depend on individual driving habits and the quantity purchased.
Possible Wider Effects
Fuel prices can affect more than motorists.
Diesel is used extensively in commercial transport, while fuel costs can form part of the operating expenses of businesses involved in logistics, delivery and passenger transportation.
Changes in transportation costs can also influence the cost of moving goods around the country.
However, the eventual effect on individual products and services depends on several factors, including transport requirements, operating costs and pricing decisions by businesses.
Government Price-Control Framework
Mauritius maintains a price-control framework for a number of essential commodities.
The Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Consumer Protection states that the Price Analysis and Monitoring Division monitors price developments and international market trends and provides recommendations relating to pricing policies.
The government’s price-control information also identifies Mogas and Gas Oil as commodities subject to maximum fixed prices.
The Petroleum Pricing Committee is therefore an important part of the mechanism through which fuel prices are periodically reviewed.
New Prices Take Effect From 29 September
The revised prices become applicable from Tuesday, 29 September 2026.
Motorists filling up from that date will therefore pay:
- Petrol (Mogas): Rs 77.70 per litre
- Diesel (Gas Oil): Rs 78.35 per litre
The previous prices were Rs 70.65 and Rs 71.25 respectively.
Final Thought
The latest 10% increase marks another significant change in fuel prices for consumers and businesses in Mauritius. The Petroleum Pricing Committee based its recommendation on international petroleum-price developments and the country’s regulated fuel-pricing mechanism.
With petrol now at Rs 77.70 per litre and diesel at Rs 78.35, motorists and businesses will need to account for the higher fuel costs from 29 September 2026. The longer-term impact will depend partly on future international oil prices and subsequent reviews under the petroleum pricing mechanism.
